Lance Alworth was one of the greatest wide receivers of his era, and of all time. As team photographer, Charles Aquaviva had a front row seat to Alworth’s performances. What follows is a series of slide shows, with the best photos of Alworth in the years 1963 – 1968.
First, some action from the 1963 AFL championship game:
Bob Suci of the Boston Patriots broke up a long pass to Alworth.
On the very next play, Alworth outlept Suci for a 48-yard touchdown.
Alworth celebrates the Chargers’ championship win.
Next, some photos from 1964:
Alworth against the Denver Broncos
Against the Raiders, Alworth caught 7 balls for 202 yards and two TDs.
1965:
Preseason against the Raiders
TD catch in Oakland
Alworth had 7 catches for 147 yards against the Jets.
Against the Bills, Alworth made the catch…
…headed for the endzone…
…but is caught from behind and fumbles, the last fumble of his career.
In the 1965 AFL championship game
1966:
Against Miami.
With a catch…
…and a 36-yard touchdown. The fans seem pretty nonchalant. Maybe because the Chargers were already up 37-10?
A couple of plays against Denver.
And two against the Jets.
1967:
A 44-yard touchdown against the oilers.
Trailing the Boston Patriots, Alworth made a catch…
…and went 24 yard to tie the game.
A 60-yard bomb…
…against the Chiefs.
Another score against Kansas City.
A big gain versus Miami.
The next 9 slides are a 57-yard tochdown against Oakland.
