I was curious about this photo from the September 19, 1965 game against the Raiders, in Oakland.

That’s guard Pat Shea carrying the ball. A trick play? A fumble recovery? Nope: in pro-football-reference and the game logs it is listed as a -5 yard rush. Puzzling – why would they give him the ball? The answer is in the game write-up in the San Diego Union:

So Hadl, about to get sacked, lateraled the ball to a lineman. Who had nowhere to go and lost five yards. Pat Shea started 36 games over the course of his four-year career, and this is his only stat: one carry for minus five yards. Such is an offensive lineman’s lot.
