The AquaViva Collection

In the 1960s, a man named Charles AquaViva (sometimes spelled Aqua Viva) was the team photographer for the San Diego Chargers. He took action shots at the team’s home games (and occasionally their road games), and publicity photos. Previously AquaViva was a staff photographer at the San Diego Union-Tribune.

In 2018, we obtained a collection of AquaViva’s contact prints. It consisted of 262 sheets; each sheet contained from 4 to 36 shots. The total number of shots was 3481.

Each shot was individually scanned, rotated, cropped, and contrast-corrected. Some shots had additional cleanup done as well.

The resulting photos were sorted by year, and by game. The photos date from 1961 to 1969.
